Cloud Formation Knot

This knot is based on the traditional signs for clouds and thunder, hence the
name. Clouds, thunder and clouds and thunder together often appeared on
ancient copperware and jade pieces in the form of pictographs that the
ancient Chinese drew after observing cloud movements and thunder. Later,
the motifs simply became decorative designs and were widely used in build-
ings, fashion and utility items. They are very familiar to the Chinese. The
cloud formation knot is an extension of the pan changknot (page 64) with
some input from the bao menknot (page 70), but here the concept of bend-
ing is extended to add further variation.

Tying

The technique is similar to that of the bao menknot, except that there are a
lot more bends. If a bigger knot is needed, each segment of the knot can be
extended proportionately. A series of cloud formation knots is very suitable
for decorating the edges of clothing.

Tip

  • The tying process puts emphasis on cord end B. Therefore, keep cord end A
short and cord end B long.
