Ling Hua Knot

This knot resembles a flower called ling huathat is frequently depicted on
ancient artifacts. It is basically a variation of the pan changknot (page 64),
and is akin to two prosperity knots (page 99) joined together. Using this
technique, but varying the length and width of the “ladders” around the
border, gives rise to a serrated, square or circular ling huaknot. Further vari-
ations can be created by increasing or decreasing the number of “ladders”
around the border.

Tying

Use the tying technique of the prosperity knot to tie the top part of this knot,
then use the same technique to complete the bottom half. During the tying
process, the width of the “ladders” can be adjusted to form a squarer or more
circular knot, and hence a taller or shorter knot. The outer loops can be
lengthened and twisted to form other designs.

Tip

  • During the tightening process, pull the cord slowly and evenly on all sides
    to avoid distorting the shape.
