A Commitment to Community


M


y kitchen garden is a metaphor for our community. The soil is like a
gathering place; the seeds are words we use to communicate. Th e wiser
the words, the better we grow to understand what is true, and it is shared
truth that governs the actions that can lead to a peaceful community.
I’m deeply committed to community.
All my adult life I’ve tried to sow a few good words to encourage my neigh­

suit of happiness by way of countless diver­
sions have limited the time we seem
prepared to spend with one another
over the family dinner table. I didn’t
see this from some kind of ivory
tower; it surrounded me, as I too was
swept along in a mud slide of com­
mercial opportunism.
I really wanted out, and struggled
