GREEN BOOK (M)
MAY 8
The themes may feel familiar, but the
extraordinary performances from the two
leading men elevate this true story to
stand-out status. This year’s Best Picture
Oscar-winner is a warmly funny examination
of a frowned-upon friendship in 1960s
America. African-American virtuoso pianist
Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is touring
the Deep South, chauffeured by Italian-
American bouncer Frank ‘Tony Lip’
Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen, both
pictured), hired for protection as much as
his driving skills. While Lip thinks growing
up in the Bronx is a good classroom for
life lessons, nothing has prepared him
for the daily degradations Dr Shirley
faces in the South. And despite the
differences in class and race, both men
have something to learn from the other.
COLD PURSUIT
(MA 15+)
MAY 29
When Kyle Coxman (Micheál
Richardson) dies from a forced
drug overdose, his father Nels
(Liam Neeson, pictured) seeks
to avenge the murder. There are
darkly comic moments as Nels,
a snowplougher, tracks the killers.
THE MULE (M)
MAY 8
Clint Eastwood (pictured) and
Bradley Cooper lead an all-star
cast in this incredible tale
- based on actual events –
of a 90-year-old drug courier
(Eastwood, who also directs)
trying to make amends for his
failure as a father and husband.
THE FAVOURITE
(MA 15+)
MAY 1
Olivia Colman’s (pictured) rollicking
turn as Queen Anne won her an
Oscar – and legions of new fans
- with that acceptance speech.
This hilarious romp through
18th-century court life features
plotting, intrigue and... duck races.
GLASS (M)
MAY 1
From master storyteller/director
M Night Shyamalan comes the final
part of the supervillain trilogy that
started with Unbreakable (2000)
and continued with Split (2016).
Bruce Willis (pictured centre) reprises
his role as David Dunn, now
a vigilante, with Samuel L Jackson
(left) returning as his archenemy
Elijah Price, aka Mr Glass. They’re
incarcerated in an asylum alongside
a serial killer with 24 personalities
(James McAvoy, right) as psychiatrist
Dr Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) sets
out to prove none of them have the
superpowers they think they do.
