FIRST MAN

Everyone knows the infamous words
uttered by Neil Armstrong in commemoration
of becoming the first man to walk on the moon,
but far less is perhaps known about the trials
and tribulations faced by NASA – and indeed
Armstrong – in the years leading up to the
successful Apollo 11 mission of 1969. This
biopic fills in the blanks, picking up in 1961
when the then NASA test pilot’s (played by
Ryan Gosling) dreams are briefly dashed with
his grounding over fears he’s distracted by
family struggles. The film took home this year’s
Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
