Dick Tucker worked with Wallace Lambert on the famous St Lambert
project in Montreal. Later, he became the director of the Centre of Applied
Linguistics (CAL) for a long time. His research covers language policy,
immersion and bilingual education and individual differences in language
learning.
“As the director of CAL he managed to stay above the parties in many of
thefierce debates on language teaching during that time.”“He has connected
thefield with relevant policy makers.”“He is highly respected as a mentor
for many researchers and students all over the world.”“He is famous for his
incredible knowledge of thefield and applied linguists all over the world.”
“He and his collaborators helped to elucidate both social psychological
richness of bilingualism and the feasibility of excellent L2 instruction
through immersion programs.”“Generous, totally weary of self-promotion,
but important.”

afield, for instance in the way Chomsky has done for linguistics as afield. It
seems that in AL there are no leaders of that type. The informants listed the
people they regarded as leaders in thefield. Though a total of 228 names
were mentioned with 58 names mentioned at least four times, there seems to
be a consensus on who are the top leaders in ourfield. The leaders typically
have a high academic standing, are innovative in their work and not focused
on single issues in their careers. Most of them are also active in national and
international AL associations, and act as editors of journals or book series.
Most of the leaders are based in North America. Non-American leaders
are typically mentioned by non-American informants. Americans mention
few non-Americans as leaders. A majority of the people mentioned as leaders
are men, but in the topfive there are three women.
Why are there no leaders of the Chomsky type in AL? Strong leaders tend
to have strong views, and though the people listed as leaders clearly have
their views, they tend to be open to other perspectives and opinions, and
followers are free to think otherwise. There may be schools, but there are no
