Some of the early books, like those by Allan, Corder and van Elset al.
have vanished from sight, though to my great joy Robert Dekeyser mentioned
the van Elset al.book:“Het boek waarvan ik het meest over toegepaste lin-
guistiek heb geleerd is hetHandboek voor de Toegepaste Taalkunde[the book
from which I learned most about AL is theHandbook for Applied Linguistics
by Theo van Els, Guus Extra, Charles van Os and Anne-Mieke Janssen-van
Dieten (1977), later in 1984 translated and published by Edward Arnold].”
“There was no other equally broad and thorough overview at that time”,as
Andrew Cohen remarked when he also mentioned this book by van Elset al.
Apart from Dante’sDivina Comédia, written in thefirst half of the four-
teenth century, the oldest book, mentioned by Hannele Dufva, was Valentin
Voloshinov’sMarxism and the Philosophy of Language(originally published in
1929, and in 1973 published in English by Harvard University Press). The
most recent is Granena, G. and Long, M. (2014)Sensitive Periods, Language
