Culinary culture vulture Kerry Teakle takes up her knife and fork for us

KERRY’S RESTAURANT ROUND-UP

KERRY TEAKLE is The Edinburgh Reporter’s
new food and drinks writer, taking over from
Juliet Lawrence Wilson — who has swapped
her life in the big city for the glorious
countryside of the Scottish Borders where she
wakes up to birdsong.
For those of you who haven’t had the
pleasure of making Kerry’s acquaintance
before, she is a self-confessed culture vulture

and food lover who also cooks.
Kerry used to blog for EdinburghFoody,
until it disbanded just before the pandemic in
March 2020, and she still reviews annually
during the Festivals for The Wee Review,
Scotland’s arts and culture magazine.
She can be found lapping up anything
culinary, or to do with the arts and Edinburgh
Festivals. And she has something to dine out

on - in October 2016, she won Best Reader’s
Recipe at the Observer Food Monthly’s Awards
for her whisky, Orange and Almond Cake.
She’ll be writing about ingredients, cooking,
producers, restaurants, and chefs, and will most
likely be throwing in the best places to eat
around the theatre and festival venues in the
forthcoming months, as Edinburgh’s Festival
season approaches.

DURBAR INDIAN KITCHEN
35-37 Shandwick place
Edinburgh EH2 4RG
http://www.durbarindiankitchen.com

Brought to you by the team who run
Nepalese Restaurant, The Khukuri at
West Maitland Street, it’s a brave
person that takes on another failed
Indian restaurant but that’s exactly
what owner Mukesh Sharma has
done. And it’s going to give other
curry houses a run for their money.
The elaborate décor of the
previous restaurant hasn’t changed,
but the menu definitely has with
Indian dishes you’re unlikely to find
elsewehere. The menu, curated by
Mukesh and his talented chef will
feature dishes representing the true

heart and soul of Indian cuisine from
Kashmir, Lucknow, Delhi, Calcutta
and Assam. Visiting with an
Australian friend who I first met
while working and backpacking in
India decades ago, Durbar Indian
Kitchen was the perfect choice to
reminisce about the flavours and
memories of that exciting country.
This is food from family dinners and
the wedding feasts that owner,
Mukesh and brother Sunil, devoured
as kids into adulthood. I promise
you will not be disappointed.

Located a 5-minute walk from St
James Quarter, Kahani is my local.
Among the first Indian restaurants
to open in Edinburgh, it’s a well-
loved place, serving up all the
traditional Indian dishes as well as
some surprises. I highly recommend
their Butter Chicken. And best of all,
it’s BYOB, although their mocktails,
lassis, are fab.
