CULTURE SPOT
England’s national sports is cricket, but to most
people in the UK, football is the sport that stirs up
passion! The most famous football teams in
England are Manchester United, Chelsea,
Arsenal and Liverpool. They are often called ‘the
big four’ by the English media. Each team has
their own mascot: Manchester United’s nickname
is ‘The Red Devils’, so their club mascot is a red
devil called Fred the Red; Chelsea’s mascot is
Stamford the Lion who is named after the team’s
stadium; Arsenal have Gunnersaurus who is a
friendly green dinosaur; and Liverpool’s mascot is
Little Liver, red bird with a yellow beak and yellow
feet. Harry Kane is one of the biggest stars that
English football has produced in recent years. He
began his career playing for Tottenham Hotspur
and has been captain of the English national
team. He clearly has a bright future ahead of him!
