Thiel for flying the T-6 camera plane. All
money raised at the event goes back into
the cost and operation of the display.
I was fortunate enough to be invited
to a gathering of vintage and veteran
aircraft at Eagle’s Nest, a private airfield
located at Ione, California. The fly-in and
barbeque was hosted by Chris Galloway
and Jimmy Rollison at Galloway’s
hangar. The airport is in the Sierra
foothills and surrounded by golden grass
fields and oak trees. In the past, weather
has been hit and miss but this year there
were blue skies and nice temperatures.
Oldest aircraft on the field included
Galloway’s 1929 Monocouple Model
113 along with Fred Patterson’s 1930
Stinson SM-8A Junior. There were plenty
of radials including a pair of Howard
DGA-15Ps, a Spartan 7W Executive,
Boeing PT-17, Waco SRE and ZQC-6,

Newly finished in post-war Navy markings,
the FG-1D Corsair flown by Will Whiteside
arrives at Ione.

Naval Aircraft Factory N3N-3 heads out on a
morning flight at Ione.

The Sanders TBM-3U made a colorful presence at Madera. Finished in post-war markings, the
Avenger was flown by Stephen Koewler.

One of the real hits at Madera was the B-17G Ye Olde Pub which has
been cosmetically refinished to look like a B-17F.
