Feucht, and
two other crewmen. However,
N.24 began having engine problems and
landed on the ice (after getting within
150 miles of the Pole). Seeing that their
companion was missing, N.25 also
touched down but it took three days for
the two crews to meet and regroup.

Two Dornier Wal (Whale) flying
boats were purchased in Italy for an
attempt to fly from King’s Bay, Norway,
to the Pole. The Dorniers were serial N.24
and N.25 and they took off on 21 May

  1. On board the two aircraft were
    Amundsen, Ellsworth, Hjalmar Risser-
    Larsen, Karl

Ellsworth. Son of a wealthy
industrialist, Lincoln did poorly
in various schools but became fixated
upon a life of exploration. In 1925, at age
45, Lincoln obtained $100,000 (some $1.7
million in 2022 dollars) from his father
and this went into the Amundsen fund to
reach the North Pole.

was to the rear on the centerline.

After years of hardship using various
sea-going vessels for his Arctic
and Antarctic expeditions, Roald
Amundsen saw that the future of polar
exploration was with aircraft.
