(coco) #1
Another Mustang paint scheme that could be described as “curious” was that carried by P-51D USAAF 44-74417/N6327T. Last operated by
the Royal Canadian Air Force as RCAF 9586, this aircraft initially went on the Canadian civil register as CF-MWB before becoming N6327T.
It eventually had his odd quasi-civil/military scheme applied that most Mustang enthusiasts agreed was an eyesore. By 26 July 2005, the
aircraft had gone through several color schemes and was now wearing relatively accurate WWII colors and markings. On that date, the
P-51 was #4 in a flight of four and was waiting to overfly AirVenture in a missing man maneuver. There was a flight delay and the formation
orbited over the area until flight leader called for the planes to go in trail and perform a lazy eight maneuver. At some point, the first three
aircraft realized #4 was not with them. N6327T appeared to witnesses to attempt a rolling maneuver, go into an inverted position and not
recover. It then appeared to dive straight down until impact. The pilot was killed instantly. The NTSB ruled that the pilot did not maintain
control of the aircraft while flying at low altitude.
