SKYFEST 50
On 25/26 June, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary as
Canada’s top flying museum by holding a very well-attended display that featured many of the
CWHM’s aircraft along with visiting Warbirds — most notably the Military Aircraft Museum’s
Supermarine Spitfire, Curtiss P-40, Bell P-39, and Flugwerk FW 190. Excellent weather allowed
thousands of spectators to watch informal flying displays while browsing the many aircraft on
display at the event, which was known as Skyfest 50.
I was able to take part in a photo mission to record this year’s Heritage Flight that included
a Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet and a P-51D Mustang owned and flown by Hannu
Halminen. The gleaming Mustang has a long and complex history and was accepted by the
