A Beautiful Day In the
Neighborhood
A jaded journalist, Lloyd Vogel (Matthew
Rhys), is assigned to interview the children’s
TV personality Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks).
In getting to know his iconic interviewee,
Vogel’s usual frostiness fades as he learns
from him about empathy, kindness
and decency.
FIVE FACTS:
- This is the ninth film in which Hanks
depicts a real-life person. - Producers have emphasized that the film
is not a biopic of Rogers, who passed away
in 2003, but instead a story with the cynical
journalist Lloyd Vogel at the centre. - Vogel himself is somewhat fictionalized
but based on the real-life Esquire journalist
Tom Junod - who, in the late 1990s, did form
a friendship with Rogers that lasted until the
latter’s death. - Rogers’ widow Joanne Rogers has
described Hanks as the perfect actor to
portray her late husband. - Before reading the script, Rhys was not
familiar with Fred Rogers, largely because he
is virtually unknown in the United Kingdom,
where Rhys was born and raised.
