035-038 Cycle Touring Chile, Argentina and Uruguay

(Leana) #1

Natural disasters in Uruguay
Natural disasters, such as tornados, heavy rain and flooding are common. Therefore,
cyclists should familiarise themselves with what to do if caught up in extreme weather.

Do’s and Don’ts
The people of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, are known to be amiable and hospitable.
However, their culture and customs differ from what you may be used to at home or
from what you’ve experienced when travelling elsewhere.

Do
Make direct eye contact while having a conversation with someone you meet. People in
this part of the world are naturally affectionate people, so don’t be taken aback when
someone stands very close to you during a conversation. It’s just a sign that they are
showing interest in what you are saying and are being friendly.
If you aren't sure of their title, address people as Senor, for men, and Senora, for
women.

Always keep your hands above the table at a meal, even when you have finished
eating.

Don’t
Don’t bother to bargain for things in stores or street markets. It’s illegal to sell items
without an issued receipt.
Although certain hand gestures are standard and come naturally to you in
conversation, many may be misinterpreted as rude.
Raising your right fist to head level is a Communist sign - avoid that hand gesture.
Do not discuss politics with just anyone, preferably only friends. If the subject comes
up, use caution.
