i did it! Furniture facelifts top the list of
favorite DIY projects. We didn’t have to look far for this inspiring example when a
BH&G staff member remade a relative’s 100-year-old DIY cabinet.
We’re dedicated to
featuring readers’
projects in “I Did It.”
But we couldn’t resist
sharing this piece
made over by BH&G
art director Christy
Brokens. Built by her
husband’s great-
grandfather using
wooden shipping
crates as drawers,
the old cabinet had
sentimental family
value and storage
potential. Christy knew
the piece could fill a
practical role in the
entryway for her
family of six. All it
needed was a light
update—one that
made it feel clean and
current but didn’t
strip away its history.
Christy’s makeover
started with a bold
green paint to cover
the old white finish. ”I
fell in love with the
color and was itching
to use it,” she says.
She decided the wide
drawers could handle
large-scale hardware,
so she replaced the
original glass knobs
with metal pulls nearly
8 inches long (Centinel;
