HOME ENTREPRENEUR

Melisa encourages
her kids to take pride
in their spaces.
Displaying their
artwork alongside
purchased pieces, like
a Busy Bee print from
Katie Ink, empowers
their creativity. She
helps them keep the
room clean by not
organizing so much
that it feels
unapproachable.
Wide, shallow wire
drawers mean
everyone can find
what they’re looking
for without dumping
out the contents and
can easily see where
things belong when
it’s time to clean up.
Melisa skipped
kid-size furniture in
the playroom, instead
repurposing her old
dining table as the art
and homework spot.
It’s no big deal if it
gets marred. “I leave
markers in jars and
tins on lazy Susans.
I hope it encourages
creativity,” she says.
When a masterpiece
is finished, Melisa
hangs the work with
clothespins so she
can easily swap in
new creations.
More than a playful
accessory, a gingham
tepee provides a
reading retreat when
the playroom gets
crowded. “Emmy
brings her dolls and
books in here,” Melisa
says. “Plus, it saves
blankets from being
turned into forts.”
