Bending the Rules
Artist Rae Andrews (raeandrews.com) enjoys fl outing the
rules of perspective, using deliberate distortion in her work
to capture a distinct vision. “I take great liberties,” she says,
“tilting and slanting structures, so buildings have an odd and
uncertain stability. Imagination plays a part in this, too, as
I might choose to add various embellishments—a telephone
pole, stonework or bricks—whatever works.” Andrews always
keeps a sketchbook or camera on hand to capture fl ashes
of inspiration. In this case, it was a side street in the hilltop
town of Comares, in Spain, that captured her attention.
