SKEPTICS SOCIETY & SKEPTIC MAGAZINE
Promoting Science and Critical Thinking

About the Skeptics Society
The Skeptics Society is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) educational organization that promotes
science literacy and critical thinking, and investigates fringe science and paranormal
claims. Supported by leading scientists, scholars, journalists and magicians, we

∏publish science-based content in Skepticmagazine, Junior Skeptic(for kids),
and eSkeptic(our free, weekly email newsletter)
∏distribute Skepticalityand Monster Talk, our free podcast
∏sponsor a science lecture series at the California Institute of Technology
and make recordings available in our online store
∏promote and sell science and critical thinking books, dvds and cds
∏organize scientific conferences and events for research and educational purposes
∏provide media with information on controversial claims
∏maintain an educational website where one can find information on all of
the above.
The Skeptics Society and Skepticmagazine investigate pseudoscientific and paranormal
claims. With regard to statements, hypotheses, theories, and ideologies examined by the
Skeptics Society, the organization adopts the view of the 17th-century Dutch philosopher
Baruch Spinoza:
“I have made a ceaseless efort not to ridicule, not to bewail,
not to scorn human actions, but to understand them.”
With regard to its procedure of examination of all claims, the Skeptics Society uses
the scientific method first developed in the 16th and 17th centuries. While it recognizes
the limitations and socio-cultural influences on science, it adopts the philosophy of
Albert Einstein:
“All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike—
and yet it is the most precious thing we have.”
