The Isis cult has extended
across the Mediterranean
in the form of the Isis
Mysteries, a Roman-era rite
centered on the afterlife.


30 b.c.
Rome conquers Egypt. The
Isis cult in Rome survives
persecution to flourish
through the next centuries
of the imperial period.

ISLAND OF ISIS
The Temple of Isis stands
today on the Nile island
of Agilkia, relocated from
Philae in the 1970s. Built
in the Ptolemaic period,
it was among Egypt’s
most important centers of
worship.
