THE NILE IN ITALY
Pompeii’s Temple of Isis, dating to the late second
century b.c., was damaged in an earthquake and
rebuilt by a rich benefactor in the years preceding
the city’s destruction by the eruption of Vesuvius in
a.d. 79. Water brought from the Nile was contained in
a cistern below the structure and used in worship.
