Srinagarindra | Bangkok Photo Walks, Issue 90

(Bangkok Photographers) #1
5

The 115th Bangkok Photographers Group walk was not, strictly speaking, in Bangkok. With
walk whisperer Mark still abroad, Greg decided to head out of the capital to explore the Pak
Nam subdistrict of Samut Prakan district, itself in Samut Prakan province. On the day of the
walk, 32 photographers joined him.
The name of the walk comes from the area’s BTS skytrain station, which takes its name
from Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) and King
Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). Affectionately known as Somdet Ya (สมเด็จย่า or “the Royal
Grandmother”), Princess Srinagarindra left such a mark on Thailand that several parts of it
were named in her honour. The name Srinagarindra has been given to a major road that
runs from Bang Kapi district to the start point of our walk, a dam on the River Kwai Yai in
Kanchanaburi province, and a district in Phatthalung province.
From the BTS station, our route took us to Wat Chai Mongkhon, Wat Klang Worawihan,
Pak Nam Fresh Market, and finally to Samut Prakan Learning Park and Tower. Naturally, we
wandered around the streets of the neighbourhood along the way, getting some wonderful
glimpses of local life in a part of the city few foreign tourists or expatriates ever see.
The fact that Princess Srinagarindra is such a highly respected royal is the reason behind
the special front cover design for this issue of Bangkok Photo Walks. After consulting with
some trusted Thai friends, Ben determined that it would have been disrespectful to break
and hyphenate the name to fit it on the page properly using the old design. Besides which,
an occasional change does us all good!
Talking of changes, we got some wonderful feedback about the new way of ordering
photos we trailed in the last issue, though the feedback was not unanimous. We will continue
to experiment and listen to the responses of BPG members before deciding on how the
magazine will evolve. In this case, we’re going back to individual sections for each of the
27 photographers who submitted their best shots. We hope you enjoy experiencing this
remarkable route through their images.

Have fun,
Greg, Mark, and Ben.
