blending and to create extra texture and dominant
lines to add character and feel to the painting.
The sky was a blend of Cerulean Blue Hue, Prussian
Blue Hue, Cobalt Turquoise Light Hue and Tinting
White (Pearl/Titanium) with a medium retarder. Towards
the top and edges I used a Phthalo Blue (Red Shade).
Sky is always slightly lighter closer to the horizon, so
this was always in mind when adding these colours.
The mud section was a mixture of Burnt Umber,
Raw Sienna Dark, Brown Black, Burnt Sienna,
Titanium White and Yellow Ochre. Light and dark
shadowing is very important in creating dimensions
to a painting and you should always keep in mind
the direction you wish the light to come from as
you are painting. For this purpose, some highlights
were also painted using Arylamide Yellow Deep.
The tree section was a mixture of greens: Terre
Verte, Permanent Green Light and Cobalt Green Hue.
This section of the painting was created by using a
dabbing motion and only allowing the tip of the brush
to touch the canvas. Again, creating dimension is
important ... therefore I used a mix of Cobalt Green
Hue and Carbon Black to add depth in sections;
and Permanent Green Light at the top right of the
foliage (bearing in mind the direction of the light).

STEP TWO

I sketched out the main image using a little bit
of white and black paint to get the outlines and
dimensions of the Mud Bashin’ Buggy. The
white was mixed with a medium retarder so
it was barely visible when first sketched.

STEP THREE

I went back and filled in a little more detail in the
background. I added more Carbon Black to the
undergrowth. I added a tree and a few branches; as
well as a little more detail in the ground section. When
adding branches amongst foliage, it is important to
have a focal point from which all the branches are
stemming. The tree to the front right was painted
using a mixture of browns and highlighted on the
right with white (the direction of the light) and Carbon
Black on the left – creating shadow. Each of the
tree’s branches was also highlighted in this way.
