  • Don’t try to rush. Painting
    takes time. Let the work
    developat itsownrateand
    builduponit gradually.

  • When paintingmud, use
    aslittlepaintaspossible.
    You can alwaysadd more;
    andyouwillgradually
    learnhowmuchyou
    needasyougoon.

  • Creatingdepth by use of
    colourandshadowsgives
    a paintingmorepowerthan
    simplyusingflatcolours.
    Grass is not just green –
    it hasdarkgreens,light
    greens,yellows,andmore.

  • Try experimentingwith
    differentthings.

  • Don’t doubt your ability ...
    youmaysurpriseyourself.


STEPFOUR

Detail was addedto the Mud Bashin’
Buggy. Using a smallbrush,I painted
each section a littlemoresolidlyusing
white and black paint;and then from left
to right I added alltheappropriatedetails
as accurately as possible.As this was the
main feature of thepainting,thedetail
and colours wereimportant.It neededto
resemble as closelyaspossibletheMud
Bashin’ Buggy thatmyclient’shusband
actually raced in.Thissectionwasthe
most time-consumingpartoftheoverall
painting and requiredgradualapplications
of small amountsofpaintwitha small
paint brush; and addingdetail section
by section. Whererequired,a retarder
medium was usedtoblendcolours.


STEPFIVE

After the main detailwas appliedto the
vehicle, it was timetoaddthemudup
the side. Using RawSiennaDark, Raw
Umber and YellowOchre,I randomly
applied each of thesecoloursusinga small
brush with a sparseamountofpaint– with


tinybackandforwardsmovementsinthe
directionofeachofthepanels.Inspots,
I alsoneededtousea mediumtothinthe
paintandavoidhardlinesofcolour.

FINALSTEP
Themudin theairwasa scarysection...
allthattimespentondetail,andnowI was
goingto addblobsofpaintoverareasofit to
createthemudillusions.Thiswastheonly
sectionwhereblobsofpaintwereadded,
creatinga fantastictextureand 3D feel to
thepainting.Usingthetyresasthefocal
point (wherethe mud would realistically
be flickedup from) I graduallyadded blobs
of Raw Sienna Dark and Raw Umber
paintfromthebackofeachtyreupinto
theairandtowardstheforegroundofthe
picture.Myadviceis to becarefulnotto
eliminatetoomuchofthedetailedsections.
Once the blobs were added, I highlighted
the top right of the larger blobs with Yellow
Ochre. CarbonBlack was used on the
other side of the blobs to create dimension;
and CarbonBlack was also thinnedto
addshadowsto thelargerblobs. n
