I wanted to placethedunesand
undergrowth. OnceI wassatisfiedI
took a feather dusterandlightlydusted
off all the loose charcoal– toensure
that it would notmuddyanycolours.

STEPTWO

The second step wastoworkon
and hopefully completethesky.I
first used the palestblue,Unison
BG6, and lightlybegantolayerthe
entire sky area –blendingwithmy
fingertips until theentiresurface
was smoothly covered.I feelthatthe
sky is air, an intangiblething;andas
such, I cannot giveanythingmore
than ethereal substance.Theskyis

alwayslightestonthehorizon,which

darkensasone’seyetravelsupwards.

Usingthemediumshadeofblue,

UnisonBV9,I nextblendeda dome

intothesky;finallyfinishingwith

thedarkestblue(UnisonBV11)up

intothetopcorners.Oncesatisfied,

I usedSchminckeWhiteonitsside

andstartedlayeringthecloudsfrom

thehorizonoftheseaupwards.I like

totakea stepbackwardsandsquint

at theworktocheckif it is OK.

I startedtoworkonthemostdistant

partofthesea,andI beganpainting

withUnisonBG2(toworkthe

water)andSennelier 133 Prussian

Bluetoenhancethedarkerparts of

theoceanandtheriseofthe swells

wherethewavesweregoing to crash

down.Onceagain,aswithevery

step,I movedbacktoensure that

theworklookedand‘felt’right.

STEPFOUR

I roughlyblockedinthedunes,

foliageandflowers,usingcolours

alreadychosenasthebasis for

each.Havingdecidedthatmy light

source(thesun)wasonthe left, I

startedusingSchminckeManganese

Violetand/orUnisonA29to give

meanapproximateideaofwhere

I wantedmyshadowstofall.
