INSIGHT

Louise Derry is very fond of using pastel for its
immediacy and versatility. Over the years she has
used oils and acrylics but still faces a huge learning
curve to master them. She believes that pastels
have been underrated for a long time. Nowadays
the quality and choice of pastel brands, colours and
surfaces is excellent.
“When I do use paints, I end up using my
fingers far more than the brushes!” she says. “I am
accustomed to the tactile nature of pastels ... colour
to surface without any tools in between.”
This artist loves landscapes incorporating skies,
seas and water. She loves Nature and vast panoramas;
elevated views; dramatic skies; and expanses of
water. She loves the ever changing dramas of the
scenes she observes – the shifts of light mood and
atmosphere. She aims to capture those moments.
For the last five years Louise has held one or two
shows each year and participated in several joint
shows; mostly locally (due to logistical reasons).
Sometimes there are limited opportunities for
pastel works to be included in competitions which
tend to display a preference for oils or acrylics.
