Whenever I go to design events, I’m constantly asking myself, “Who
is this aimed at, what will they be getting out of it, and should they be
expecting more?” Then comes the hardest question to answer: “Is the
promise of inspiration really worth the (sometimes eye-watering) price
of admission?”
Our readers include freelancers, students and creatives forging
their path in design studios. In all cases, taking time out of busy
schedules and spending hard-earned money on tickets and travel
for the intangible benefit of recharging your passion is a big ask. And yet,
when design events hit the spot, you can leave them not only with a head
full of ideas, but also an iPhone full of contacts – not to mention new
work. In this issue, we look at some of the design events that are run for
the right reasons, by creatives who care about their industry
and the people within it. I hope reading our report over on
page 62 will help you pin-point the events, starting from this April, that’ll
help you scratch that creative itch.
And for those looking for an inspiration chaser, how about CA’s
Illustration Hotlist – our annual pick of the most exciting,
creative, and quite frankly mind-blowing illustrators working
today. Have a look, and then get in touch if you’d like to see them reveal
their creative processes for a future Artist Insight (page 80).
In our next issue, we’ll be focusing on our very own Brand Impact
Awards with a special report that looks at exceptional
examples of typography, illustration and copywriting within
branding – three areas that will be represented as new categories in this
year’s BIAs. We’ll also delve into animation trends, and why it’s a great
time to get into that creative field. For now, I hope you enjoy this issue!
Get inspired!
