Former animator Sebastian Curi is the newest signing to illustration agency Handsome Frank, and senior
agent Stuart Whitton says that he “hit the ground running,” and “quickly developed a unique style centred
around quirky figures who live in their own universe.” The Argentinian-born, Vancouver-based creative
started illustrating as something to do between renders, and quickly fell in love with the discipline. His work is
dynamic and fluid, but also bold – a testament to his animation background and graphic design degree.
“I like to use strong lines, big shapes and simple colour palettes,” says Sebastian, whose characters are full of life, with
scant facial detail and unusually proportioned limbs. He says he “enjoys drawing people a lot,” and often creates “a lot
of sketches in a wobbly line style” before hitting on an idea he wants to paint in colour and work up in Photoshop and
Procreate. “I’m a big fan of creating something day by day,” says Sebastian. “I show up, and put the hours in to create
something I believe is interesting, leave it to rest a day to see if [I feel the same]. And repeat!” He’s worked with agencies
Collins, Koto and IDEO, and publications like The New Yorker and Refinery 29.
