Key moments in the life of Sir Henry Unton
(c1558–96) are illustrated in this unusual and
elaborate painting, commissioned as a posthu-
mous record of his life by his widow, Dorothy.
Not only does it depict his involvement in
notable historic episodes – on campaign against
Spain in the Netherlands, for example (shown
top right) – but also his birth, education, death
and daily life: making music, banqueting and the
performance of a masque of Mercury and Diana.
