iCloud Genius Tips

Master iCloud on Mac
Apple has integrated iCloud into the very fabric of macOS through System Preferences and Finder.

A quick tour around some of iCloud’s key Mac features

Using iCloud on your Mac

As your iCloud Drive exists within Finder on your Mac, there is an easy way to ensure that you go straight
to it whenever you open a new Finder window. Here’s how you set it up.

Easy access to iCloud Drive

Mac iCloud settings
Your Mac’s iCloud settings can be accessed by
going to System Preferences>Apple ID>iCloud.
All of the Apple apps that use iCloud will be listed
in the main window and you can disable iCloud
access simply by unticking the boxes.

Optimise storage
If this option is ticked then,
provided you have enough
space on your Mac, the entire
contents of your iCloud Drive
will be stored locally for easy
access. If hard drive space is
tight leave this option unticked.

Store in iCloud
In the unlikely event of you having more free space in
your iCloud than on your Mac, you can opt to store files
and documents in iCloud. Go to Apple Menu>About This
Mac>Storage and then click on the ‘Store in iCloud’ button.

Manage your
storage
Click on this button to see how
your iCloud storage is being
used. From here you can delete
documents and data stored in
iCloud from specific apps and
click on ‘Change Storage Plan’
to purchase more storage space
if required.

Access your Drive
Go to Finder>Preferences>
Sidebar and tick the ‘iCloud
Drive’ option. Now, whenever
you open a new Finder window,
you can access your iCloud
Drive by clicking on the name in
the sidebar.

1

Open Preferences
While in Finder, go to Finder>Preferences
and click on the ‘General’ tab at the top of
the window. Here you will see a menu called
‘New Finder windows show’. Click the menu.

2

Choose Drive
From the menu, choose the ‘iCloud
Drive’ option and whenever you open a new
Finder window from now on, it will open
straight to your iCloud Drive.

3

Try it out
Close the Preferences window to
save your new setting and then try it
out by pressing Cmd+N or going to
Finder>File>New Finder Window.
