iCloud Genius Tips

As we have mentioned, extra storage plans are available for iCloud to boost your storage, but do you really need them? If you’re just
mainly using iCloud to backup your iPhone and your iCloud storage is full, there is a workaround to avoid upgrading your plan.

Avoid paying for extra storage

1

Transfer your photos
To avoid risking losing any photos,
connect your iPhone to your Mac, open
Photos, click on your iPhone in the left-hand
column and then click ‘Import All New Items’.

2

Manage backup
On your iPhone, go to Settings>Apple
ID>iCloud and tap ‘Manage Storage’. Now
tap ‘Backups’, select your device and then
turn off the ‘Photo Library’ option.

3

Tap to delete
You will be asked if you want to turn off
Photo Library backups and delete the backup
data from the iCloud – tap ‘Turn Off & Delete’.
Nothing will be erased from your device.

4

Disable iCloud Photos
Now go to Settings>Apple
ID>iCloud>Photos and then turn off the
‘iCloud Photos’ option. You can then tap
‘Remove from iPhone’.

5

Tu r n on s t r eam
Go to Settings>Apple ID>iCloud>Photos
and turn on ‘My Photo Stream’. Photos will
automatically upload to your stream where
they will be kept for up to 30 days.

6

Smaller backups
You can now enjoy smaller iPhone
backups that won’t require any extra iCloud
storage space while accessing and importing
your photos from your Photo Stream.

If you find that you are requiring more iCloud storage space or have too much then you can switch storage plans quickly and easily. We’ll
demonstrate how on iOS but you can do it on Mac by going to System Preferences>iCloud>Manage and clicking ‘Change Storage Plan’.

Change your storage plan

1

Open settings
Go to Settings>Apple ID>iCloud and tap
‘Manage Storage’. The graphic shows how
your storage is being used. If it’s full or has
lots of free space, tap ‘Change Storage Plan’.

2

Choose an option
Your current plan will be displayed, as
will the next available storage upgrade. If
you require more space, tap on the option
under ‘Choose Upgrade’ to switch plans.

3

Downgrade storage
If you have free space that you don’t
need, tap on ‘Downgrade Options’ and you
will be able to revert back to your free 5GB
allocation or select a lesser storage plan.
