Bokeh
A DSLR photographer can open their
camera’s aperture wide to create a shallow
depth of field. This adds a background blur
(bokeh) that helps the eye focus on the sharp
foreground subject. The iPhone’s Portrait
mode mimics this selective blur effect to
create a more attractive shot. Unlike a DSLR
photo you can adjust the strength of a
Portrait mode’s blur in the Photos app.

Create a sellable stock photo

S

tock photo sites such as Shutterstock enable you to
sell your photos. A single sale may only earn a few
pennies but over time a trickle of cash can turn into a
stronger flowing income stream. However, before a photo can
be accepted for sale it has to pass a stock site’s quality control
inspection. If a photo lacks detail due to incorrect exposure then
it may be rejected. If the main subject’s focus is too soft then
it may also be rejected. Fortunately the Photos app has plenty
of tools to tweak colour, tone, sharpness and composition to
create a more acceptable stock photo. You can spruce up your
stock shots from the comfort of the desktop version of Photos or
edit on the go using the iOS Photos app.

Tweak colour, tone, sharpness and composition

Exposure
A correctly exposed shot
should have an undulating
histogram graph that
spreads from the far left (the
shadows) to the far right
(highlights). If the graph is
clumped to the left or right
the photo may be under or
over-exposed.

Zoom tool
To see if a shot is truly nice
and sharp you need to view it
at 100%. Click here to zoom
in (or drag the slider). 100%
magnification also helps you spot
and fix picture noise caused by a
high ISO speed.

Adjust
Adjust panel. This gives
you access to all the photo
fixing tools that you’ll
need to create a colourful,
well-exposed and sharply
focused stock image.

Composition
Our start image has a slight tilt due to the way the
iPhone was held when snapping the shot. Click
here to access an angle wheel that can rotate the
shot to counteract its wonky horizon.
