Record a Vlog for your

YouTube channel

A

nyone with an iPhone can produce a ‘talking head’ style
video to pop on their YouTube channel. However their
video log’s audio may be hard to hear as their voice
echoes off adjacent walls. Poor production values can put
people off viewing your channel’s content, reducing your chance
of building subscribers (and limiting your opportunity to earn
cash from your YouTube channel’s content). We’ll demonstrate
how to record your Vlog’s talking head footage via your Mac’s
FaceTime camera and then edit your material using iMovie. You’ll
learn how to produce a more polished looking show thanks to
post-production ‘bells and whistles’ such as Picture in Picture
effects and captions. We’ll also suggest extra kit to help you
produce better quality video/audio without busting your budget.

Publish
You can export your edited Vlog directly to your
YouTube channel (as well as adding keywords
and categories to help viewers find your content).
An export progress wheel appears here.

Overlay
After clicking on a clip on the top layer of the
timeline you can access the Video Overlay
settings. These enable you to access the Picture
in Picture effect to creatively combine the
presenter’s clip with background footage.

Titles
The Titles browser gives
you access to a range of
slick animated titles and
captions that you can use
to enhance your Vlog.

Crop it
To remove background clutter, shoot
your Vlog’s ‘talking head’ component
against a piece of coloured card. If the
card isn’t large enough to fill the frame
you can crop out the messy edges.

PiP in iOS iMovie
You can also create a Picture in Picture effect on the iOS
version of iMovie. In your iOS iMovie project tap the ‘+’
icon. Browse to tap on a video in your Library. Tap the ‘...’
icon and choose ‘Picture in Picture’ from the ‘Add as...’
menu. Tap the cross-hair icon then drag to reposition (and
pinch to resize) the inserted picture.
