Caches are designed to speed up the Mac, so clear them only if you need the
disk space or you suspect a problem with them.

The Disk map feature is yet another way to
find and delete files on the disk to free up
space when it is running short. It shows
how much disk space is being used by
folders and subfolders on the disk visually
and it can give you a better view of what is
using the most space on a disk. Use it to
explore the disk contents and see where
space savings can be made. Remove
unnecessary files and folders.

Create a

disk map

1

Map a folder
Select Disk map in the sidebar and then
click the Select Folder button. Navigate to the
folder you want to scan and map, then click
‘Open’. Your home folder is a good place to
perform a disk map scan.

2

Explore and remove
A list of folders and files sorted by size
with the largest first is displayed. Move the
mouse over each item to see it highlighted
visually in the disk map on the right. Use the
checkboxes to select items to remove.

Step-by-step Free up gigabytes of disk space

1

Scan for junk
Install Cleaner One from the Mac App
Store and run it. There are three sections
(ignore More Tools) and the first finds junk files.
Select it in the sidebar and click ‘Scan’.

4

Find big files
After clearing junk from the disk there is
more space to be saved. Select ‘Big Files’ in
the sidebar and click the ‘Scan’ button. This
finds all large files, junk or useful.

2

Sort and browse
Junk files are organised by category
like caches, logs and temporary files. Click a
category like ‘Caches’ to see the files that have
been found and sort by name or size.

5

Protect valuable files
Take care with this function not to delete
valuable files. Mouse over items to keep and
click the padlock to add them to the Ignore
List. Select files with the checkboxes.

3

Check and remove
Use the checkboxes to choose whether
to delete whole categories or individual files.
Mostly unnecessary files are selected, but
check anyway. Disk images may be needed.

6

Trash or delete
After selecting big files to delete, click
‘Next’. Click the menu next to the Remove
button and select ‘Remove To Trash’. Empty
the Trash to permanently delete them.
