Backup and trash

Before using this utility, make sure

you have a backup of everything on

the Mac’s disk. The app will not delete

anything unless you take action to

select it, but it is still easy to make a

mistake and delete something you

wanted to keep. Files are moved to the

Trash folder. Open it and copy deleted

files back if necessary.

here are duplicate files on the Mac’s disk and some files

are not only duplicated, there may be three, four or more

versions. They use up valuable storage space not only on

the Mac’s internal drive, but also in backups like Time Machine

drives. How can this happen and what can you do about it?

There are various ways duplicates arise and you may import

music, photos and videos, but instead of moving items into the

libraries, you copy them instead, leaving the original on the disk.

You may make temporary copies of files so they can be edited or

accidentally download a file twice from the web without realising.

Pick a category

The interface and features

are different for each type

of file. Select a category

here like Pictures, Movies or

Documents to browse the

files. Click ‘Similar Photos’ to

find similar images, but not

necessarily duplicates.

Duplicate counts

Each file appears in the

sidebar. Select it to view the

duplicates. If there is a single

number, it is the number of

duplicates found. With two

numbers, the first is the

number selected for deletion.

Auto Select files

If there are too many files to manually

browse and select. Click ‘Auto Select’ to

apply rules set up in Preferences to select

files or click the arrow and choose an

option like ‘Select Oldest’.

Select files

Documents, movies and

photos have different

controls, but in each case,

there is an option to select

files to keep or delete, like

checkboxes or thumbs up.

After selecting files to keep,

click ‘Review & Remove’.
