By adding a what3words sticker to your photos, you

W

hat3words is a location app that divides the
entire globe into tiny squares measuring just
three metres by three metres. In associating
three words with each of those individual squares, this
clever geocode system then allows you to pinpoint a
precise position anywhere in the world, making it an
accessible alternative to latitude/longitude co-ordinates.
The app has already proven useful, particularly in
allowing the emergency services to track people lost in
terrain that is difficult to describe. But there is also a lot of
scope for some fun, with the latest feature being the ability
to snap a photo and have three location-specific words
printed on a digital sticker that is then overlaid on to the
image. Here we take a look at how it works.

Step-by-step Add what3words addresses to photos

1

Launch what3words
Update what3words to the latest version
(or install it for the first time) and open the
app. Move your finger left at the bottom of the
screen to show the icon for Photo.

2

Allow Camera access
Tap the Photo icon and allow the
what3words app to access your iPhone’s
camera. You will now be able to snap an image
from within the app.

3

Take a photo
You will see two options at the bottom
of the screen – one to take a photograph and
the other to switch cameras – as a well as a
what3words location at the top.

With what3words, you can add stickers to your photos to
indicate exactly where they were taken
