Convenience vs data saving
There is no doubt that saving mobile
data limits some functions of the
iPhone when you are not within range
of Wi-Fi. No streaming, no syncing, no
music or TV, and so on. However, the
number of Wi-Fi hotspots is increasing
to a point where you are never very far
from a signal and full functionality. Turn
off mobile data and see.

Save mobile data on the iPhone

T

hose of you lucky enough to have an unlimited mobile
data phone contract can skip this article. Everyone else
has to keep an eye on mobile data usage and keep
within their monthly allowance and exceeding it can cost a lot of
money. It is easy to burn through 1GB of mobile data in a month
without really trying and many people struggle with 2 or 3GB.
Avoiding watching Apple TV+ or listening to Apple Music
on the go provides major data savings of course. If you are
nearing your data limit each month, here are the settings you
need to tweak to reduce data usage even more. You might even
save enough to watch TV or listen to music on mobile data, at
least occasionally.

Minimise iPhone data usage

Stop
mobile usage
Stop non-essential apps
and activities using mobile
data. For example, Photos
uploads images using
mobile data unless you
turn off this switch. Don’t
worry, it automatically
syncs when the iPhone
connects to Wi-Fi.

Avoid streaming
Listening to music or
watching TV on your
commute to and from work
uses gigabytes of data. Turn
off the switch for Apple TV,
Podcasts and other apps
from using mobile data. They
work with Wi-Fi.

No Wi-Fi Assist
When this switch is on, the
iPhone checks the internet
speed for mobile and Wi-Fi
and uses the fastest one.
Great! Except it can use a lot
of mobile data. Disable it to
minimise data usage.

Settings

Don’t use iCloud
iCloud Drive stores
documents and data and
syncs on the go when this
switch is on. It is the most
convenient setting, but it can
use a lot of mobile data. Turn
it off to limit activities to Wi-Fi.
