Step-by-step Open ODT documents in Word

Get Microsoft Word

Go to the app store and install Microsoft

Word. For this tutorial, we’re assuming you’ve

received an ODT file by email but Word can

open them from elsewhere.

Tap the file

With the email containing the ODT file

open in front of you, don’t be tempted to tap

and then select ‘Preview Content’. This will just

confront you with some garbled text.

Select Share

Instead, tap the document in Mail but

select the share button in the top-right corner.

Swipe along and tap ‘More’ – you’ll see Word

will be listed as one of the options here.

here are many benefits of the Open Document

Format for word processing, spreadsheet and

presentation documents, the biggest being that it’s

an open standard. It’s used by popular packages such as

LibreOffice and OpenOffice but if you’ve come across one

of these ZIP-compressed, XML-based file formats on your

iPad – perhaps sent by email – you’ll know how tricky they

are to open.

Luckily, you don’t have to ask someone to resend it.

Instead, you can simply install Microsoft Word, Excel or

PowerPoint – all of which can be obtained for free. By

doing this, you can not only view but edit the documents,

saving them too. In this tutorial, we’re going to be looking

at the ODT text-document in particular but the same

principle applies to other files.
