Gaze at the

stars using

Google Earth

G

oogle Earth focuses squarely on our planet but
that doesn’t mean it cannot look beyond what’s
under our feet. There was a time when zooming
away from the globe in the Google Earth app would show
us located within a pitch black sky. But, understanding
that it didn’t reflect the actual situation (which is a space
filled with a rich abundance of stars, planets and other
celestial bodies), Google has now made amends.
Today, you’ll see the stars as they would be seen by an
explorer of space thanks to images taken by the European
Southern Observatory. Here we take a look at how you
can view them, while looking at the guides that not only let
you explore different aspects of our immediate universe
but let you see Earth from the viewpoint of space.

Use your iPad or iPhone as a window on the universe
and see the stars around our planet

Step-by-step Get guided space-based tours using Voyager

1

Launch Google Earth
Install the latest version of Google Earth
on your iPad (or iPhone) and open it. You can
explore our own planet in the usual way using
your fingers to navigate the globe.

2

Start your journey
As well as zooming out to see the night
sky, you can also try a guided tour. Tap the
Voyager icon in the left-hand menu or tap the
main menu icon and choose it from there.

3

Go for Nature
In the Voyager window that appears, tap
the Nature tab. Now scroll down and look for
the many space-related map-based stories,
among them images of Earth from space.

The updated Google Earth app now lets you explore space,
as well as our planet. You can also share what you find...
