head could hold so much.’ ”
Ms. Medved borrowed the Corin-
thian columns, English-style fire-
places, elaborate chandeliers and ca-
thedral ceilings for her design. For
the living room, she designed
a hickory wood fireplace
with candelabras and carved
Elizabethan figures.
Then there is the study.
“My husband wanted to be a
cowboy,” Ms. Medved said.
The room has an expansive
stone fireplace and timber
beams honed from trees on
the site. A fresco on the ceil-
ing depicts buffalo, Texas
Longhorn cattle and despera-
dos pulling up in a stagecoach. Mr.
Medved’s face is painted on a desper-
ado, and Ms. Medved is pictured inside
the stagecoach.
The study is also filled with taxi-
dermied animals, most of which Mr.
Medved shot himself. One he didn’t
shoot, however, is a bear. Mr. Medved
said he has long dreamed of shooting
one, since his family name means
bear in his parents’ native language.
They hailed from the country for-
merly known as Czechoslovakia.
The roughly 160-acre prop-
erty also includes an outdoor
pool, a private shooting range
and hunting facilities, and a
working cattle and horse
ranch with barns, horse runs,
silos, an indoor arena and a
caretaker’s apartment. There
are about 50 mother cows,
bulls and a small number of
horses on the property. Mr.
Medved said the animals
could be sold with the prop-
erty depending on a buyer’s prefer-
ences.
In the early 1990s, the Medveds
bought the site of a former ski resort
that went bankrupt in the 1980s and
an adjacent ranch, they said. They had
to raze the ski lifts and towers to
build their dream house. Construction
took close to two years and was com-
pleted in 1999.
The couple worried that building
such a massive home might alienate
people in the community and poten-
tially hurt their business. But they said
the property was ultimately well-re-
ceived, and they’ve used it to host local
events. One woman in the local plan-
ning office warned them that they’d be
divorced by the time the project was
finished, but they proved her wrong.
The couple said they are selling be-
cause their six children are grown,
and the house is too big for two. The
property is listed by Katie Williams
and Anne Dresser Kocur of LIV So-
theby’s International Realty.

In a former gold rush town outside
Denver, on top of a former ski resort,
a massive mansion inspired by the
English Cotswolds and the Old West is
listing for $37 million.
If it sells for that price, the sprawl-
ing property would be among the
most expensive homes ever sold in
the area, according to real-estate
agents there.
The roughly 17,000-square-foot,
eight-bedroom home was mostly in-
fluenced by a trip to England, when
John and Debi Medved, owners of six
Colorado car dealerships, rented out
St. Catherine’s Court, they said. The
16th-century manor house was gifted
by King Henry VIII to his tailor and
once was owned by the actress Jane
Seymour, according to reports.
Ms. Medved, though not a contrac-
tor, led the design process, jotting
down notes on stray napkins. “She
said, ‘I’ve got it all in my head, I’ve
just got to get it out,’ ” Mr. Medved
recalled. “I said, ‘I never knew your
