Preface

on this systematic, ambitious project. As noted in the acknowledgments, this under-

taking involved others as well. We highlight the importance of conversation and

exchange in this preface, as it is our earnest desire that this book might function

as something of a companion or an assistant in cultivating or helping inform conver-

sations among our readers. Our hope is to enrich dialogue rather than to substitute

for it in any way, for these definitions are only the beginning of philosophical

exploration.
