TALENT

EW TEAMED UP WITH THE SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART
AND DESIGN FOR ITS EIGHTH ANNUAL AT V F E S T IN ATLANTA

By Lynette Rice

HAD EUPHORIA’S HUNTER SCHAFER
stuck with her original plan, she’d
be pursuing a career in fashion
design—much like the many art
students who heard her speak
at the Savannah College of Art
and Design (SCAD) aTVfest in
Atlanta Feb. 27–29. Instead, she
was there to accept the festival’s
Discovery award for her breakout
role as a trans teen on the HBO
drama, a career pivot she made
only after responding to a casting
call on Instagram. “I want to
encourage everyone to explore all
the pathways that you may not
think you are capable of,” the
20-year-old former model told the
audience of mostly SCAD stu-
dents. “I’ve been acting for two
years now.” In its eighth season,
the SCAD aTVfest is as much a
celebration of small-screen pro-
gramming as it is a reminder that
some of the best Hollywood gigs
can be found on TV. Kim Cattrall,
63, showed up not only to accept
the Icon award but also to pro-
mote the next chapter of her
40-plus-year career—the juicy
role of a Southern widow who
assumes control of the family’s
Christian TV network on Fox’s
upcoming sudser Filthy Rich.
“Instead of an Icon award, I’d like
to think of this as an ‘I Can’ award,”
she told the crowd. “I can, and I
will.” Spotlight award winner Jus-
tin Hartley, 43 (This Is Us), took a
trip down memory lane with EW
editor in chief JD Heyman about
what it was like to play the Green
Arrow on Smallville, and the cast
of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
reflected on how personal their
NBC show feels, even when they’re
breaking out in song and dance.
And in a wistful moment of self-
reflection, Impact award winner
Eric McCormack, 56, explained
how he knew the time was right
to bring the second iteration of
Will & Grace to a close on April 16.
“It was the right decision to bring
it back, but it was also right not to
keep them around for too long,”
he told EW. “We’ve gotta feel like
we are fulfilling something in
the TV landscape.” Don’t worry,
Mr. Truman: You did.
