THE RATINGS
Recommended vehicles, indicated witha check mark (!), are the models withthe highest Overall Scores that meetthe threshold in their category.Make + Model reflect the vehicle wetested and its engine displacement.Overall Score reflects a vehicle’sperformance in our road tests; the latestresults from the reliability and ownersatisfaction sections of CR’s exclusiveAnnual Auto Surveys; the availability offrontal crash prevention systems withforward collision warning, automaticemergency braking, and pedestriandetection, along with blind spot warning;and, if available, results from governmentand insurance-industry crash tests.Survey Results reflect findings fromCR’s Annual Auto Surveys, completedby Consumer Reports members.Predicted reliability is our determinationof how well a model will hold up, based onthe problems that members reported inCR’s Annual Auto Surveys, which includedata on around 420,000 vehicles.Owner satisfaction is based on thepercentage of surveyed owners whosaid they would definitely buy the samecar again. We use a model’s latest threeyears of data to determine the prediction, provided it hasn’t been redesigned orsignificantly updated. In cases where wehave insufficient survey responses, orwhen a model is all-new or redesigned, weuse our expert judgment based on brandtrack record and similar models to predictreliability and owner-satisfaction ratings.Road-Test Results include CR’s testfindings that we feel are the most rel-evant. We buy and test between 50 and60 vehicles each year, driving them forthousands of miles and putting themthrough more than 50 tests and evalua-tions. The results of these tests make upour road-test score. Some tests, such asthose for braking and fuel economy, aremeasured with instruments; categoriessuch as seat and ride comfort, noise, andfit and finish are graded by our experts. The Usability rating is a combination ofour testers’ assessments of the ease ofperforming everyday driving tasks, aswell as cockpit ergonomics and interfacedesign. The energy consumption of elec-tric vehicles is expressed in a miles-per-gallon equivalent rating (MPGe).Energy consumption for plug-in hybridsis listed in electric and gas modes.Advanced Safety identifies whethera vehicle has forward collision warning(FCW); automatic emergency brakingthat operates at city speeds (AEB,city) and/or at highway speeds (AEB,highway); a pedestrian detection system(AEB, pedestrian); and blind spot warning(BSW). Each system must be standardon all trims to gain an extra point in theOverall Score. We use S to indicate thatthe system is standard; O means it’soptional on some versions; a dash (–)means no system is offered. Why Some Vehicles Are Not RatedCertain models have been redesignedor extensively freshened since our lasttest, or are new. All are scheduled to beincluded in future road tests. Modelsinclude the Chevrolet Corvette, HyundaiSonata, Mazda CX-30, Mercedes-BenzGLB, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Highlander, and Volkswagen Passat. What Our Ratings Symbols Mean1
