Sustainability is meeting the current need without jeopardising that of our own or someone
else’s future. This isn’t just our personal experiences but for all futures economically, socially
and environmentally. Some of you may have heard of the ‘R’s’ of sustainability or at least the
most common three Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But to me there are a lot more than this.
What are these 9 Rs?
These 9Rs stands for Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture,
Repurpose, Recycle and Recover. The meaning of these strategies might seem intuitive,
obvious even, but it is essential to know what they imply and when they should be used.
Out if these 9Rs, here are few which I personally feel make a huge impact on the betterment
of our surroundings,
Rethink
The aim is to think about how our actions and purchases affect others and our environment.
Refuse
Before you purchase or use anything always, aim to refuse. By refusing to accept the many
poor practices by companies and the harmful & unethical products you will reduce their
impact on our world
Renew
Even when you think the item is damaged, broken or beyond its use can it be repaired or
rebuilt for use again, if not can it be repurposed to be useful in some way
Replant
Have a look around you and notice the amount of greens you see. Animals as well as sapiens
can be seen gasping for air and water. To combat these negatives we need an alternative that
helps restore the vegetation. Replanting is the lead of this movie!
Recently, India has also implemented this 9R framework in its e-waste management system
aiming towards a less hazardous and sustainable approach. This brought uo a rise in e-waste
recycling from 60% in 2018 to 80% as that of 2022.
9Rs when followed in a regular manner may lead to an huge positive impact on our lives,
affecting both the flora and fauna around us, making our surroundings more sustainable and
develop a better place to live in.
What the R?
