048 Cycle Touring Colombia

(Leana) #1

Turbo

Early morning, we took off to the port. The ticket office was a hive of activity as
many boats departed from Turbo to various destinations along the coast. Thank
goodness, we met Simon (an Austrian gentleman who lived in Colombia), who
spoke to the ticket lady on our behalf. The problem seemed to be the bikes as the
boat was already full. Various people came to look at the bicycles, shook their
heads and discussed the circumstances in Spanish. They were worried port
authorities would deem the bikes as cargo and wouldn’t allow the boat to continue.

To make a long story short, tickets were purchased for the coming day. The “ticket”
turned out simply a handwritten piece of paper; how official that was, was anyone’s
guess. Practically anything was possible - all one needed was money, time, and
patience.
