Capital City
Bogota is the capital of Colombia and houses the Congress of Colombia, the
Supreme Court of the country, and the President's residence. It is Colombia’s
largest city, with a population of 7.9 million.
Currency
The currency in Colombia is the peso (COP). The official peso symbol is $, with
COL$ also being used to distinguish it from other peso-denominated currencies.
Language
Most Colombians speak Spanish, probably around 99%, but plenty speaks the
“conquistadores” language as a second tongue. In addition, it is estimated that
around 70 indigenous languages are spoken in Colombia.
Religion
Colombia does not have an official religion. The national department of Statistics
does not record the religious affiliations of the population, but various studies and
surveys suggest that approximately 90% of Colombians are Christian.
Location and size
Colombia is the fourth largest and second most populous country in South America.
Located on the northwestern part of the continent, it is bounded on the west by the
Pacific Ocean and on the north by Panama and the Caribbean Sea. Its neighbours to
the east are Venezuela and Brazil and to the south, Peru and Ecuador. The equator
passes through the country's southernmost regions. Colombia was named after the
explorer, Christopher Columbus.
Population
The estimated population of Colombia was 49.85 million in 2019.
