A new Batman fi lm is always highly
anticipated and Matt Reeves, director of the
new movie, has put the internet all-of-a-fl utter
with a fi rst look at the new Batsuit.
Reportedly set in the Nineties, Reeves’
The Batman is set to star Robert Pattinson
as the Bat alongside Jeffrey Wright as
Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred
Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz, Zoe Kravitz
as Selina Kyle (see box-out left) and Paul Dano
as The Riddler.
Reeves showed snippets of the iconic suit
via Twitter in a video entitled ‘The Batman

  • Camera Test’. Bathed in red light and set to
a macabre score by Academy Award winner
Michael Giacchino (who has also composed
scores for Spiderman: Far From Home, The
Incredibles and Doctor Strange among many
others) the video unveils Pattinson wearing
the iconic costume for the fi rst time.
Though less than a minute long, the video
reveals a few interesting points of note. Firstly,

Matt Reeves unveils a sneak peek at the new Batman suit
WORDS RACHAEL HARPER

the armoured-looking suit – complete with
interlocking plates – has, some have said,
remnants of the look from the 2015 videogame
Batman Arkham Knight, which sees Batman
rescuing Gotham from fear toxin. However,
the game’s antagonists, Scarecrow and
Deathstroke, are characters which have not
been announced as being part of the fi lm.
The video also has a focus on the suit’s
chest piece, which isn’t the classic Batman
symbol but rather a bat-like shape that looks
to be functional, which some commenters
have mused could be a gun made from the
weapon which killed Batman’s parents (as
seen in Detective Comics #1000). Interestingly,
we do not see the ears in the video – an
appendage which is also not seen on the new
chest piece...
Obviously, this is all conjecture right now
and we will have to wait until the movie’s
June 2021 release date to see the suit in its
full glory.

Could the chest

HELLO KITTY
We speak to Zoë Kravitz
about her Catwoman costume
in The Batman...
INTERVIEW: ADAM TANSWELL
“The costume has been an evolution,”
Zoë Kravitz says on her Catwoman costume
for The Batman. “Jacqueline Durran, our
incredible costume designer, has been
beautifully collaborative. It wasn’t as though I
came to set and she threw something on me.
No, it’s been a long process and we’ve had
many conversations about what we wanted
it to look like. Matt, our director, had specifi c
ideas, so there were many fi ttings where we
would change things here and alter things
there. Recently, we got to a place where we
would put it on and think: ‘There she is. There
it is.’ It’s exciting. There’s no part of me that
feels casual about it. They called me to set
recently and I was in the outfi t – and I looked
at everyone and it was so cool. I remember
thinking: ‘Oh my God... This is incredible.
This is such a cool thing to do.’ What they did
with the costume is really exciting...”
