One of the ways in which Dries and the
production team have grounded the show –
and also connected it to Batman lore – is by
shooting certain exterior scenes in Chicago,
the city that stood in for Gotham in Nolan’s
Bat-trilogy. According to Johnson, it helps them
to “keep the heart of the Batman universe in our
show... we want to keep that grittiness, we want
to keep the streets of Chicago, the roads, the
rooftops, the cityscapes”. It also keeps Johnson
in a state of happy disbelief that he is now
occupying the same extended universe as that
trilogy of fi lms.
Gotham City and its wacky residents are rich
grounding for a TV show, and Dries and her
team have found a lot of material to work with
from the comic books. She tells us that Tommy
Elliott will feature in Season One; an old friend
of Bruce Wayne who, “because he comes off
as incredibly arrogant and just kind of awful,
he gives us great insight into the Wayne legacy.
Also if you follow the comics you know that he

becomes one of Batman’s arch enemies, Hush.
So we are excited to see that story unfold.”
Arkham Asylum was seen in the Elseworlds
crossover, but Dries promises a return to it, and
also teases the appearance of Batman rogues
including Magpie, Duela Dent and Nocturna.
Going forward into Season Two, Dries has
once again returned to B a t wo m an’s comics.
“We’re defi nitely going to explore another vein
of [B a t wo m an’s] mythology that we don’t deal
with in Season One, and something that is very
true to the comic books.”
Dries isn’t interested in simply coasting on
Batman’s coattails – Batwoman is the star of
this story and the driving force behind it. As
one of DC’s biggest break-out ‘new’ stars (the
character is now 14 years old) Batwoman is
certainly rich enough to stand on her own
two feet – and we’re interested to see how
her show progresses.

Batwoman is coming to E4 in early spring.

NOT STARRING BATMAN

Running out of Gotham-centric TV shows that don’t feature Batman?
We might have some ideas...

BEYOND THE VALE
Plucky journalist Vicky Vale
sets off to shed her tabloid
reputation and use her
platform for good as she
tackles organised crime in
Gotham. Slam Bradley as
reluctant sidekick??

ICE ICE BABY
COLD AS ICE
Terminally ill Nora Fries
just wants to work through
her bucket list, but begins
to be concerned by
her husband’s growing
obsession with cryogenics.

TWEENAGE DIRTBAG
Life’s a drag when you’re
hitting puberty and your
mum’s an evil bitch and
your granddad’s Ra’s
Al Ghul and no-one’s
taking your vegetarianism
seriously. Also, you’re a
child assassin (maybe lead
with that?).

PENNY FOR EM?
Alfred Pennyworth
takes a job as a high
school guidance
counsellor. Things
soon get out of hand.
