“THIS IS AN AWESOME

SHOUT OUT TO THE
OLDER MOVIES AND
IT REALLY HAS THAT
STAR WARS FLAVOUR
TO IT”
GINA CARANO

SUIT UP
Pedro Pascal tells us about wearing that iconic armour
“Everything that looks good comes with a price. It’s definitely
challenging, because these old bones aren’t as young as they
used to be. There’s a very specific silhouette and it’s completely
mobile – but to teach your body how to move in it to the best of
its ability is very challenging. The costume is about 30 pounds
of extra weight, so it’s not easy. It’s much harder to just get
up from a sitting position than it is to be standing the whole
time. But this guy was talking to me the other day – I was at
a breaking point because I was so physically tired – and he
referenced something that he did on his first movie, which
happened to be The Terminator from the Eighties. I was like:
‘Wait... I am one degree of separation from the first Terminator
movie? This is incredible.’ I said to myself: ‘Get over it, you’re
fine. Get over the physical discomfort and remember who
you’re around. And also remember that it’s everybody that
makes this story.’ There are about five people that help me get
into the costume, because everything has to be just right. It’s
very collaborative. I love it.”

But the set is so interactive now that it really
enhances our performance because you're not
having to make believe about something. It's all
happening around you.”
Though The Mandalorian is yet to launch in
the UK, US audiences have clearly liked what
they have seen and the show has already been
commissioned for a second season: “Well, we
know we're doing our second season, so we
know the story's continuing,” confirms Weathers.
“With television in particular we don't have
multi-year contracts. But we are in this second
year for sure; we signed the contracts for that.
So we know there's going to be another eight
episodes at least.”
The actors are clearly impressed with the
show too, and fact that The Mandalorian is part
of the iconic Star Wars franchise is not lost on
them, in fact, it’s even making some of them new
fans of the movies: “For me, I thought I was a
fan. I was like: ‘oh, I love the movies.’ But I didn't
understand what all of the drama was about,”
says Carano. “But then, when I got involved in
this project, I went back and I started to watch
everything again and that's when I realised I
was missing so much by being a ‘casual’ fan.
There's so much more depth that comes with
these stories. So I now consider myself to be a
‘newborn’ fan.”
“The first time I stepped on to the set was a
huge deal,” enthuses Pedro. “The first

time I put on the costume and looked in the
mirror was epic. It was a shocking experience
because to physically inhabit something that
harkens back to your childhood is really weird.
My legs, my torso, my arms and my head are
physically a part of Star Wars now. And
that’s weird.”

The Mandalorian will be available along with
the Disney + launch in the UK on 24 March.
