MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN

  • MONSTER IN A MIRROR -

10 FRANKENSTEIN

ADAPTATIONS

FRANKENSTEIN
(1931)
James Whale’s picture for Universal Studios
dispensed with most of the novel, but we’ll
forgive him, because it’s great. Its 1935 sequel,
Bride Of Frankenstein, is another showcase for
Boris Karloff’s indelible take on the creature.

HAMMER FRANKENSTEINS
(1957–1974)
Peter Cushing was a fi xture in Hammer’s
numerous and typically inventive versions of the
source material. Ralph Bates, Veronica Carlson
and Christopher Lee were among the genre
luminaries joining in the gory fun.

THE ROCKY HORROR
PICTURE SHOW
(1973)
Richard O’Brian’s stage musical sees Dr Frank N
Furter invent a creature, Rocky, while a fun,
sexy time is had by all. The 1975 feature fi lm
sealed the Faustian deal.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
(1974)
That’s Fronkensteen to you. From one of the
greatest novels ever written to one of the funniest
fi lms ever made, courtesy of Mel Brooks. Gene
Wilder plays Frankenstein’s heir, surrounded by
props from James Whale’s 1931 Frankenstein.

THE BRIDE
(1985)
Sting as Frankenstein? Jennifer Beals as
his female creation? It could only have
been made in the Eighties. There is no
singing or dancing in this grim version of
the tale, though.

GOTHIC
(1986)
Not an adaptation as such, Ken Russell’s fi lm
recreates the atmosphere of that fateful night
on Lake Geneva. Scripted by Stephen Volk
and starring Natasha Richardson, the movie is
soundtracked by synth pioneer Thomas Dolby.

FRANKENSTEIN
(NATIONAL THEATRE, 2011)
Directed by Danny Boyle, this
acclaimed stage version of the book
featured alternating performances in
the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his
‘monster’ by Benedict Cumberbatch
and Jonny Lee Miller.

PENNY DREADFUL
(2014–2016)
Victor Frankenstein and his
creature (who is played by Rory
Kinnear) both pop up in this
acclaimed horror series,
alongside Timothy Dalton and
Eva Green.

FRANKENWEENIE
(2012)
Tim Burton’s remake of his own 1984
short is a sweet-natured stop-motion
animation in which the reanimation
of a beloved pet leads to all kinds of
complications. Stuffed full of parodies
and references, it’s a genre treat.

THE FRANKENSTEIN
CHRONICLES
(2015)
Anna Maxwell Martin played Mary
Shelley while Sean Bean played
a police offi cer investigating body
snatching in 19th Century London in
this take on the novel, aired by ITV.
